I frequently tell the story of an encounter a few years ago with a leader from the Central African Republic. He was requesting assistance from Encompass in the training of a man for a key leadership role.
“Tell me again,” I asked, “How many churches are there in the CAR?”
“More than 2,000,” was his reply.
“And how many pastors are urgently needed?”
“More than 1,000!”
“And how many professors are needed immediately at our four Bible Schools and Seminary?”
“More than twenty!”
“Then please help me understand,” I gently asked, “how training one more man will make a difference?”
It was then we agreed to begin thinking differently about how to respond to opportunities in the CAR. ‘One-by-one’ may be an appropriate strategy in some parts of the world, but not in a region where the GBC is the largest evangelical denomination.
We agreed to dream and act on a level worthy of the opportunity before us.
