The oscillating fan sitting on the balcony does very little to cool the heavy heat created by the morning sun rising over the bustling capital of this Southeast Asian city. Humming motorbikes below can’t drown out the chanting monks over a loud speaker at a nearby Buddhist temple. Troy and Jen enjoy their morning coffee with Bibles open, trusting God for their “daily bread.” The Word of God is sustaining them and moving them toward their dream of a multiplying ministry of disciples making other disciples.

When they finish in God’s Word, they begin praying by name for friends and new contacts they’ve been making in the city. Troy has been connecting with a growing number of artists who are finding community in their shared interests. New relationships are forming, and ongoing ones are deepening through his ministry among these young creatives. Jen prays for her work with a local NGO which is rehabilitating victims of human trafficking. She praises God for some big breakthroughs with the girls she compassionately serves as she helps them secure jobs after they’ve received care. Troy and Jen finish in prayer by asking God to break the strongholds that paralyze this animistic culture with fear. “In Jesus name…” resounds in their hearts and minds as they look up from an intense time of faith shaping prayer.

Troy and Jen turn their attention to the week ahead, finding times when they can plan to connect with friends and even host an evening meal. They hope to deepen relationships with key people they’ve talked to about Jesus. Finishing their daily meeting they prepare to hit the city streets to visit the local market, getting what little they can carry back while visiting with friendly shop owners along the way. The food they’ve gathered is for the evening meal they’re preparing to host with other members of their disciple-making team. Each week they meet in homes to encourage each other in the work of sharing Jesus with this needy city.

Later that day Troy returns from a visit to a local gallery, celebrating the opportunity he had to share the gospel with a fellow artist who agreed to meet with him for a discovery Bible study. Gathered around the table that evening, the team shares stories of how they’ve observed God working in the lives of those with whom they are connecting. They also share about the growing political tensions in the country surrounding the upcoming elections. They have plenty to praise God for during the team prayer time that concludes their evening together.
