Caleb Green of Columbus, Ohio, had heard about the St. James Way in his Spanish classes at Ohio State University. But he didn’t consider going until he talked with Encompass staff members Tim Hawkins and Alfredo Abreu when they were in the States. Hawkins and Abreu serve in Portugal, near one of the St. James Way routes.

Green learned that Grace Church in Norton Ohio, was taking a group on the St. James Way. He contacted Pastor Doug Jensen about going and, in 2010, made his first trip on the pilgrimage.

Jensen’s son, Luke, was also in the group. He and Green quickly became good friends because of their passion for this outreach. Encompass missionary Sam Schwartz (Portugal), said, “Both men are extremely enthusiastic about sharing their faith with other pilgrims.”

camino-06-053“I think the coolest thing about this trip is how easy and natural it is to share the gospel with people,” Green said. “It is so common to hear about Europeans not being interested in the gospel. On this trip, though, you can share the full message of the gospel a couple times a day.”

Green and Jensen walked the Way again in 2011. This time, Green’s parents, Dan and Nancy, came along.

Their desire for others to catch the vision and make the trip is evident as they continue to promote the ministry. “It was such a great trip for evangelism and personal, spiritual growth that it is easy to tell others at church about it,” said Green.
