Ted Ruiz reports on a death anniversary, which in the Philippines are just as important as Birthdays.
Tiring (tee-RING) is a fairly new believer in Pamplona GBC, Bicol. Her husband has been dead two years and for the first 2 Death Anniversaries she celebrated them the way that most Catholic Filipinos do.
Special “Praying People” are hired ($4/hour) to come to the house to pray. The person kneels on the floor for 1 hour while 5 hired companions watch. The praying person looks at a special book with a picture of the deceased person. There is a lighted candle in front of this praying person, who prays fervently that the deceased person’s soul may one day enter Heaven.
But this year, parting from the traditions, Tiring wanted a “Thanksgiving celebration” instead.
