Every year Grace Brethren people help alleviate suffering caused by natural disasters. Through Relief Agency Brethren (RAB), our rapid response ministry, victims of tsunamis, earthquakes, epidemics, and famine have received much help.
On Wednesday May 2nd the Bible Institute in Chad suffered significant damage from a severe thunderstorm. Winds damage the roofs of the main building containing the library and classrooms. Many of the metal roof sheets where scattered throughout the surrounding fields, the professors and students gathered them and placed them back on the trusses, securing them only with bricks and large rocks.
Also damaged was the elementary and middle school building roof, it was peeled back by the powerful winds. The homes of the students and professors were not spared, with one student house having a large section of the wall collapse and a majority of the roof removed. A small building of the professor Dadje Simon Nguinayo collapsed while his children were inside, injuring one.
Immediate intervention is needed to avoid further significant damage as rainy season is just beginning:
- $8,000 to replace the Bible Institute roof and repair the other roofs.
Short term needs (1-2 months):
- $9,000 to reinforce with cement the walls and floors and the house on the campus at the Bessao.
Less short term needs (3-6 months):
- $6,000 for repairs the cracked walls, repaint due to water damage, replace items damaged by the rain.
