Eyes That See Opportunities

Eyes That See Opportunities

by Judy Daniels

God has opened Gerardo’s eyes to see the lost everywhere.”

Not everyone has the ability and passion to “see the lost everywhere.” But when GBIM cross-cultural church planter Jesus Munoz made that statement, he knew his words fit.

The man Munoz was describing is Gerardo Leiton,  pastor of Iglesia Comunal Cristiana in Tampa, Florida.

Munoz knows Leiton well. In 1995, Munoz was the one God used to lead Leiton to salvation. He has seen Leiton’s ministry expand beyond Tampa into other areas in the U.S. and across the borders into several Latin American counties. Leiton, who is from Costa Rica, has been pastor of the Tampa church since 1998.

Leiton’s vision for reaching the lost has been caught by his church.

“After time in prayer,” Leiton said, “we adopted Walter Testa and his family as missionaries for our church to sponsor.”

This relationship resulted in sending three teams to Mexico City every year since 2008. The Tampa believers have provided resources for the Mexico City ministry through leadership training and outreach activities. This exposure to missions has benefitted Leiton’s church in several ways, as he explained:

“We feel blessed to know that we have brothers and sisters in Christ in other parts of the world. This has also helped our church put a ‘face’ on missions by cultivating a relationship with our missionaries. It is encouraging to see that even through hard social and economic circumstances, there is a group of people who serve Him faithfully.”

Leiton and his church have also been involved in missions in Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaraugua, as well as in U.S. ethnic churches. Missions Coordinator Jose Marguez leads the planning of this ministry for the church.

“The Tampa church is supporting a mission to poor children in Columbia,” Munoz said. “They have more than 60 children that are fed and taken care of through…prayers and support. God is giving Gerardo and his church many opportunities.”
